The epicenter of the earthquake was located 82 kilometers southwest of the coast of Huehuete, in the Nicaraguan department of Carazo

Managua, November 9 (RHC)-- An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 shook much of Nicaragua Monday night without leaving victims or material damage, official sources reported.

The Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (Ineter) reported that the epicenter of the tremor was located 82 kilometers southwest of the coast of Huehuete, in the department of Carazo, while the hypocenter was located at a depth of 21 kilometers.

Authorities indicated that the telluric movement occurred at 20:53 (local time) and was felt in the capital and all the Pacific region of the Central American country.  The earthquake was due to the collision between the Cocos and Caribbean plates, which cross this region, according to the official report.

"It was a strong tremor, we understand that it was felt in the Pacific and as it was so strong also in the central and northern area" of Nicaragua, said Vice President Rosario Murillo to local media.  The vice president called on citizens to take preventive measures in case of possible aftershocks.
