Port-au-Prince, January 31 (RHC)-- According to a survey published in Port-au-Prince, 82.4 percent of Haitians want to emigrate due to the difficult economic situation the country has always been going through.

The study conducted by the Citizen Observatory for the Institutionalization of Democracy and published by local media shows that among the main causes are: the precarious economic situation, the hostile political climate, insecurity, as well as the decrease in the purchasing power of the population.  In turn, young people with an average level of education represent a higher percentage than those with no education.

Haitian emigration has increased considerably since the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, when the political crisis reached its peak.  The Dominican Republic and the United States are the countries to which most Haitians emigrate.  In the case of the United States, they do so in unsafe boats or by joining the caravans that find their departure point in Central America.

According to data from the World Organization for Migration (IOM), in the last months of last year around 15,490 Haitian migrants were repatriated from the United States, as well as from other Caribbean countries.
