New York State is launching an investigation into social media platforms used by the suspect in last weekend’s attack by a white supremacist who killed 10 Black people in a Buffalo supermarket.

Albany, May 20 (RHC)-- New York state is launching an investigation into social media platforms used by the suspect in last weekend’s attack by a white supremacist who killed 10 Black people in a Buffalo supermarket.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced the investigation, saying: "I’m announcing a referral to the Attorney General’s Office to investigate the social media platforms that broadcast this horrific attack, that promote and elevate hate speech and legitimize the replacement theory in the mind of an 18-year-old, a radicalized 18-year-old.”  Governor Hochul also announced a series of steps to tighten New York’s gun laws.

In related news, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill aimed at combating domestic terrorism, in light of the Buffalo massacre.  The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act passed on a vote of 222 to 203 with the support of just one Republican lawmaker.  It calls for the creation of domestic terrorism offices within the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security.
