Former Bolivian President Evo Morales on Thursday took advantage of the visit to his country by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard to thank the Mexican government for saving his life during the 2019 coup d'état.

Sucre, August 5 (RHC)-- Former Bolivian President Evo Morales on Thursday took advantage of the visit to his country by Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard to thank the Mexican government for saving his life during the 2019 coup d'état.

"Welcome, Brother Foreign Minister Ebrard.  Your visit strengthens the ties of solidarity and brotherhood between Mexico and Bolivia.  We reiterate our gratitude to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for saving our lives during the coup d'état," Morales wrote on the social network Twitter.

At the end of 2019 and after winning the general elections, the Bolivian ultra-right, together with high commanders of the Army and the Police, carried out a coup attempt that removed Evo Morales from power.

Faced with the latent possibility of being assassinated, Morales decided to leave the country for Mexico, where he received political asylum.

After the coup d'état, a de facto government presided over by Jeanine Áñez was installed until, after general elections were called in 2021, the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) organization, represented by the current president Luis Arce, won again.  Evo Morales, who was in Argentina at the time, was then able to return to the country.
