Lima, December 12 (RHC)-- Thousands of demonstrators gathered outside the Peruvian Congress on Sunday and demanded the release of former President Pedro Castillo.  Protesters rejected the attempt to deprive him of his immunity to make way for his indictment by the Prosecutor's Office, on a day in which two deaths and more than twenty injured were reported as a result of police repression.

In downtown Lima, the demonstrators took control of Bancay Avenue, in the vicinity of the Legislative headquarters, from where they demanded the closure of Congress, that elections and a Constituent Assembly be held, and the immediate restitution of Pedro Castillo as head of State.

Organizers of the protests said they do not recognize the administration of Dina Boluarte, sworn in by the Congress after the dismissal of Castillo.

The two demonstrators were killed by repressive forces were in the Peruvian city of Andahuaylas, in the region of Apurimac.  Protests were also carried out in other regions of the country.
