Protesters are also demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and the advancement of elections to 2023

Lima, December 28 (RHC)-- Leaders of the 13 provinces of the department of Puno, in southeastern Peru, have agreed to resume a strike for an indefinite period on January 4, to demand the closure of Congress and the convening of a Constituent Assembly.

According to Radio Pachamama, the popular leaders also decided to prepare a march to Lima, the capital of the South American country.  As for the strike, the measure will involve the total closure of highways, marches and mobilizations.

In addition to the closure of Congress and the Constituent Assembly, the demonstrators are demanding the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and the advancement of elections to 2023.  

Peru has been experiencing a series of protests since last December 7, when the parliament dismissed President Pedro Castillo, who is under preventive detention for 18 months accused of the alleged crime of rebellion.

The legislators, after the dismissal of Castillo, who hours before had decreed the dissolution of the Congress and called for a Constituent Assembly, appointed Dina Boluarte, who was serving as vice-president, as president of the country.

According to a report of the Ombudsman's Office, the repressive actions of Boluarte's government against the protests have left 28 dead and dozens injured and detained.
