Santiago de Chile, January 4 (RHC)-- The Chilean Senate has approved the constitutional reform that enables the new process for the elaboration and approval of a new Constitution in the South American country.  The proposal was approved in the Senate Chamber by 42 votes in favor, seven against and one abstention.

The senators who supported with their vote the constitutional reform project, hope that its processing in the Chamber of Deputies will be quick in order to advance in the implementation of the new roadmap during the current month of January.

Following the vote, Senate President Álvaro Elizalde noted that rarely has a reform bill obtained support from more than 80 percent of lawmakers.  The Constitution Commission of the Senate approved to advance the itinerary for the new Magna Carta, which considers the installation of its three bodies: Constitutional Council, Expert Commission and Technical Committee of Admissibility; besides the exit plebiscite on December 17.

After receiving the Senate's approval, the Chamber of Deputies will begin debating the project in the Constitution Committee on Wednesday, where there will be sessions on Thursday and Friday to receive hearings to analyze the text.
