Chilean Camber of Deputies analyzed bills related to crime and citizen security

Havana, March 28 (RHC) The Chilean Chamber of Deputies convened its members to analyze on Tuesday three bills related to the issue of combating crime, as well as improving the climate of citizen security.
The meeting was called urgently after the impact caused among the population by the death of police sergeant Rita Olivares, who went with other colleagues to a house where a robbery was reported, and they were received with bullets.
Another member of that police force recently died after being run over by an individual who was participating in a street fight and tried to flee to avoid arrest.
The anxiety in Chilean society due to the increase in criminal acts led the National Congress (parliament) to modify its agenda for this week and dedicate it exclusively to dealing with security, described as the main concern of the people.
On this day, three initiatives will be discussed to make modifications to the current Penal Code.
The first of these consists of increasing prison sentences for the crime of kidnapping and the second refers to penalizing more forcefully the improper carrying of firearms in places with a large influx of public.
The third topic consists of sanctioning the conspiracy with the purpose of committing the crime of homicide.
According to the president of the Lower House, Vlado Mirosevic, there is a commitment from the parties with legislative representation to discuss and vote on a total of seven projects related to the fight against crime throughout this week.
In addition to those mentioned, there are others related to the confrontation with hit men, the reform of the gendarmerie corps, immigration control and the so-called Naín and Retamal laws, regarding the powers and protection of the police.
A recent survey indicated that insecurity is the main concern of the majority of Chileans, above economic issues, such as the increase in the cost of living. (Source: Prensa Latina)
