Death toll in Peru rises to 69 due to protests

Havana, April 4 (RHC) The number of deaths during protests against Peru's designated president, Dina Boluarte, increased after the death of 37-year-old Manuel Quilla on Monday.

According to the victim's relatives, Quilla was tortured in a police station in Lima. With his death, there are already 69 deaths in the protests, of which 50 are attributed to extrajudicial executions, according to the balance of the Association of Volunteer Brigade Members of Peru.

Last weekend, a congress of the relatives of the victims of the repression in Peru was held in the city of Juliaca, in the Puno region. While the event was taking place, Manuel Quilla died from the consequences of an alleged torture. Quilla had gone to Lima to participate in the demonstrations against the government of Dina Boluarte, a situation in which he was surrounded and beaten by the police. The family claims to have all the evidence of police mistreatment.

According to human rights organizations, the death of Quilla becomes one more element for the investigations and a key to determine the violations by the Boluarte regime, who was appointed president by Congress on December 7, after the dismissal of the constitutional president Pedro Castillo.
