Panama Strengthens Fight Against Aedes Aegypti, Albopictus Mosquitoes

Panama City, August 29 (PL-RHC) -- The Panama Health Ministry (Minsa) announced on Thursday an increased fight, in areas of dificult access, against the mosquitoes Aedes Aegyptis and Albopictus, both transmitters of dengue and Chikungunya hemorrhagic fever.

The Minsa, through the Health National Board, delivered 18 outboard motors to regional health departments, in order to reach very remote areas where the presence of those insects is very well known.

Miguel Antonio Mayo, acting minister and the Director General of Health, Itza Barahona de Mosca, noted that it is a priority for MINSA to improve its equipment and other resources like vector inspectors, to eradicate diseases that present themselves in complicated sectors like Darien.

Cipriano Ayarza, coordinator of the Vectors Control Department in the indigenous region of Guna Yala, revealed that in addition to dengue, there is Malaria and until last week, 33 cases were reported in one community and about 83 in the region.
