UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres

Port-au-Prince, Jul 2 (RHC) UN Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres has encouraged talks among Haitian political actors to seek possible solutions to solve the domestic crisis and restore democratic institutions.

“Only an inclusive Haitian national dialogue with full involvement of women and youth will put an end to insecurity and find lasting political solutions,” said Guterres at a press conference at the Toussaint Louverture airport.

In this regard, Guterres urged all actors to create pressing conditions to restore democratic institutions and thanked recent inter-Haitian talks facilitated by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to establish a Government of national unity and expand the High Transitional Council.

“Everyone must look beyond their interests and make concessions to facilitate the emergence of a common vision and a viable and credible electoral path,” Guterres stated.

Guterres paid a visit to Haiti on Saturday before attending the CARICOM Summit in Trinidad and Tobago.

During his stay, he met with Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry, members of the High Council for Transition, representatives of civil society, and political parties, to discuss the pressing need for a political agreement to end the crisis.

The Secretary-General also referred to the growing humanitarian needs in Haiti, a country where one in two people live in extreme poverty, go hungry, and have no regular access to clean water.

Guterres insisted that this is no time to forget Haiti or weaken solidarity with its people while recalling that justice has not been done for former President Jovenel Moïse, assassinated two years ago. (Source: Prensa Latina)
