Havana, Aug 10 (RHC) Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will ask the country's President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly, leaving an interim government in power until general elections are called for the end of this year.

During his speech in the Assembly, Sharif said that "tonight, with the permission of the House, I will send the declaration for the dissolution of the National Assembly to the President".

This will take place before the end date of the legislature (August 12) to activate a mechanism that will extend the deadline for holding the elections from 60 to 90.

The current premier will meet with opposition leader Raja Riaz Ahmad in parliament to discuss the appointment of a new interim prime minister to lead the country.

Sharif gave a brief review of the 16 months he has been in power, backed by a coalition of more than ten parties that pushed for the ouster of former prime minister Imran Khan from power.

The senior official was one of the promoters of the no-confidence motion that ended in April 2022 that mandate to whoever succeeded him.
