Tegucigalpa, August 31 (RHC)-- The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, has announced that opposition deputies are boycotting in the National Assembly the appointment as attorney general and deputy prosecutor of the two best evaluated candidates.

"The National Congress, composed in majority by politicians who oppose my mandate, boycotts the appointment of the best evaluated candidates by the Opinion Committee, for attorney general and deputy as provided by the Constitution," Xiomara Castro stated in a message on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter).

The denunciation of the Honduran head of state occurred after the election of the new prosecutors was postponed due to the lack of agreements between the main benches of the unicameral Parliament.  The president of the Congress, Luis Redondo, informed in a message in the social network X that the session called for this Wednesday would not be held, so he convenes for this Thursday at 11:00 local time.

"We continue with the extensive days with the different benches and congressmen to achieve the necessary consensus for the election of the new authorities of the Public Prosecutor's Office," Redondo published.

Wednesday's session was suspended in order to "give time to achieve the necessary consensus" and elect the two prosecutors, Redondo said.  The new heads of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Honduras must be elected by at least 86 of the 128 deputies that make up the Parliament no later than Thursday to take office as of September 1 for a period of five years.

The current attorney general of Honduras, Óscar Chinchilla, and his deputy, Daniel Sibrián, will finish their terms this August 31st.  The deputies reached an agreement in Tuesday's session due to lack of consensus between the Libre bench and the main opposition parties of the Parliament, the National, Liberal and Salvador de Honduras parties.
