United Nations, September 21 (RHC)-- The president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, said Wednesday that multilateralism is the answer that all countries were waiting to be heard, as it is an option to the unipolar or bipolar world.

During an exclusive interview with the news multiplatform teleSUR, the Bolivian president said that it is time to question the weight that the United Nations should have as an institution capable of generating the balance that the world needs.  "Multilateralism is an answer that all countries were waiting for, to be heard, to be included in this new block of thought of countries where we should all be represented and also have a little bit of decision of what happens in our planet," he said.

The Bolivian leader indicated that, in spite of the interventions that took place in the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, it was clear that humanity will not be able to meet the goals established by this organization, since the countries still do not agree on the treatment of issues related to the problem in Eastern Europe or climate change.

"It is a climate crisis caused by a capitalist system that has put everything in place for us to be in this situation. Humanity is at risk and, unfortunately, nothing concrete has yet landed in the United Nations to solve this problem," he stressed.

Luis Arce reflected on what COVID-19 represented for humanity, and pointed out that even before the pandemic appeared, the world was showing notable signs of backwardness, to which was added the conflict in Eastern Europe.  "So, this is getting more complicated, and there is no proposal from the United Nations and the countries that should take the leading role here, that instead of fomenting war, they could take actions to prevent what is coming, because it will affect the whole of humanity", he said.

Likewise, he called attention to the fact that the United States pays more attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict than to the conflict in Ukraine "they are very long wars and we are not resolving them, as was the case with the blockade of Cuba where there are United Nations resolutions that are not being complied with".

The Bolivian leader alerted the peoples of Latin America about the reality of climate change and urged them to realize that it is something much crueler than what is said, since its consequences are evident mainly in the South of the region.

In this sense, he said that the ambition for development and capital gain brought serious problems to nations with development restrictions, so it is "something we have to face and make compatible: development with harmony with Mother Earth and that is much more costly".

"That development is going to cost us more because we have to face the issue of being able to mitigate the effect on the environment and on Mother Earth. So, it is much more complicated for us," he said.

With respect to Bolivia, he indicated that the climate crisis has not stopped affecting it for approximately three years, which forces the Andean nation to take measures such as reforestation or the construction of dams to guarantee water for life and production.

"The situation is getting more complicated and reality is winning us the speeches of interpretation, of good wishes, of proposals but that in the end are not fulfilled. And the world continues to turn but the climate crisis is profoundly affecting the people," he said.
