United Nations, May 29 (RHC)-- The UN chief has decried a deadly Israeli airstrike targeting displaced Palestinians in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah, urging an immediate end to what it called horror and suffering across the Palestinian territories.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, in a statement, called for the horror and suffering to stop immediately in Gaza, his spokesperson said on Tuesday.  The UN chief reiterated his demand for an immediate ceasefire across the Gaza Strip.

Guterress recalled a recent ruling by a top UN court that ordered Israel to immediately halt its ground offensive in Rafah.  He stressed that the ICJ rulings are legally binding and Israel must comply with them.

The UN chief also urged the regime to allow the immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to those in desperate need in the besieged Palestinian territory.   "The Israeli authorities must allow, facilitate and enable the immediate, safe and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need and all crossing points must be open," UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.

Israel's three-week-old Rafah offensive stirred renewed outrage after an airstrike on Sunday (May 26th) ignited a blaze in a tent camp in a western district, killing at least 50 people.

The attack came two days after the Court ordered Israel to stop an aggression on Gaza that has killed more than 36,000 people since it started in October last year.
