Caracas, June 7 (RHC)-- The Executive Secretary of ALBA-TCP, Jorge Arreaza, today congratulated the directors and workers of the Latin American Information Agency Prensa Latina on the 65th anniversary of its founding, on June 16, 1959.

In an audiovisual sent to the Information Agency office in Caracas, the head of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People's Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) highlighted that this media outlet “is a reference” for communication in the region and in the world.

From the executive secretary "we want to congratulate all the professional, technical, administrative staff and workers of Prensa Latina," he remarked.

Arreaza considered that “it is central” that the existence of the Agency “continues to develop successfully” and mentioned that it has been growing and is present in dozens of countries, and now with multimedia platforms, it is all over the world and in all modalities.

The leader of the Latin American and Caribbean bloc referred to the origins of the media outlet born in Havana, Cuba, and stated that Prensa Latina “is not just any agency.”

This was created, he recalled, as the primary idea of the Cuban Revolution by Fidel Castro, Ernesto Che Guevara, and Jorge Ricardo Massetti and that generation of men and women who gave their lives and blood for the freedom of Cuba.

He recalled that many well-known journalists worked there over the years -- including Colombian Gabriel García Márquez, Argentinean Rodolfo Walsh and many others who have been references, not only of journalism in Our America, but of journalism for truth, peace and the unity of our peoples.

"Count on ALBA-TCP and its 10 member countries and beyond, on the social movements of the Alliance to be a source of information, monitoring and to build together the world of equality, peace and human development that humanity deserves," he stated.

“Thank you very much, Prensa Latina!  Congratulations!” Arreaza concluded.

On June 16, 1959, the Latin American Information Agency became the first alternative media on the American continent to the large information monopolies, dominated by the United States.

In the midst of the avalanche of misinformation against the nascent Cuban Revolution, its historical leader Fidel Castro called for Operation Truth and, in amid the efforts to disseminate truth about our reality, Prensa Latina was born, whose slogan yesterday and today continues to be “At the service of the truth.”

With its headquarters in Havana, this Latin American news organization is currently present in more than thirty countries on all continents and maintains professional ties with more than one hundred media outlets around the world.  (Source: Prensa Latina).
