Sao Paulo, October 11 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Former Brazilian President Inacio Lula Da Silva on Friday denounced a defamation campaign by the Social-Democrat (PSDB) leaders against the center-left Worker's Party (PT) President Dilma Rousseff.

The accusations come two weeks before the second round of the presidential elections on October 26th when Brazilians will head to the polls again to either re-elect Rousseff or right-wing rival Aecio Neves as their president. According to the latest electoral surveys, Neves leads with 51 percent over Rousseff's 49. The runoff winner could depend on who Marina Silva supports, the candidate who came third.

“It's the same story every time there are elections. Accusations begin to be lodged without evidence, and based only on rumors or insinuations to discredit the supporters of the PT,” the former president said in a meeting with bank sector employees in Sao Paulo.

“We cannot let a 'tucano' [a member of the PDSB] call us corrupted,” he added. Soon they will launch an investigation on how we were behaving in our mothers' bellies," he joked, encouraging the PT members and allies to keep their head high and deny the allegations.

The PT national leader, Rui Falcao, Thursday condemned the declarations of the former director of Petrobras, Paulo Roberto Costa, to a judge, which were leaked to the local press, which in turn published them, despite that they are still under judicial secret until the end of the legal process.

Lula said that the "tucanos" have resorted to these tactics because the opposition believes they cannot win the elections through concrete proposals or political proposals, and because they lack the ability to debate the important issues that matter in Brazil, such as education, economy and employment.
