Ramallah, September 3 (RHC)-- Palestinian health officials say a Palestinian man arrested by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank has died as a result of beatings and torture while in detention.

Director of Jenin Government Hospital Wissam Bakr told the official Palestinian news agency WAFA that the body of Ayman Rajeh Abed, a 58-year-old resident of Kafr Dan village, arrived at the medical facility handcuffed, showing clear signs of torture after a thorough examination of his body.  Bakr added that the examination revealed evidence of beatings on various parts of Abed's body, confirming that he had been tortured during his arrest.

Ayman Taha, a relative of the deceased Palestinian man, said Abed was detained in the early hours of Monday after Israeli forces raided his home, and viciously beat him up.
Following the raid, Abed was transferred to the Salem military checkpoint, where further torture led to his death.

Taha emphasized that his relative was in good health at the time of his detention, and did not suffer from any serious illnesses or health problems.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) stated that its paramedics received Abed's body from the Salem military checkpoint.

For its part, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad resistance movement condemned in the strongest terms the killing of Abed at the hands of Israeli forces.  The Gaza-based group described the treatment of Abed as a “documented war crime,” lashing out at international bodies and humanitarian organizations over remaining silent about regime atrocities against Palestinians.

It called on international and Arab institutions to demand the arrest and prosecution of Israeli authorities for the abuses inflicted on Palestinian prisoners.

The Islamic Jihad movement underscored that such acts of brutality would never deter Palestinian resistance fighters, but would rather reinforce their resolve to continue the struggle for the liberation of occupied lands.

Abed’s death raises the number of prisoners who have died in Israeli prisons since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza on October 7th last year to 25.

Since Israel unleashed a war on the besieged Gaza Strip in early October 2023, casualties have been rising in the West Bank as a result of intensified near-daily Israeli raids into villages and cities in the occupied territories.

According to Palestinian health officials, at least 679 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 5,400 others injured by Israeli forces in the West Bank since the outbreak of the war on Gaza.

At least 40,786 Palestinians, most of them women and children, have also been killed in the Israeli genocidal war against the Gaza Strip during the past 11 months.
