Tel Aviv, September 28 (RHC)-- An Israeli newspaper has warned Israel about the consequences of launching a ground invasion against Lebanon, describing it a “death trap” set up by the Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah.

Hebrew-language daily Yedioth Ahronoth said on Friday that Israeli forces could be exposed to potential risks should Tel Aviv attempt a ground invasion of Lebanon.  It noted there is no immediate readiness for an incursion into the Arab country despite the deployment of the regime’s troops to the northern part of the occupied territories.

The newspaper went on to say that the majority of senior leadership believes that Israel made “a tragic and bitter mistake” by waging a war on Lebanon twice before and that it should avoid doing so again.

It said Israel’s current approach is a repeat of its strategy when it waged a war against Lebanon in 2006, believing it could defeat Hezbollah using air power alone, without a ground invasion.

When that strategy failed and Hezbollah continued to launch attacks on Israeli towns and cities, Israel was forced to invade Lebanon – an invasion and war that “failed to achieve any of its objectives,” the newspaper added.

This comes amid the latest escalation of violence between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon that has raised the risk of a greater regional war.

Israel has been conducting near-daily attacks against southern Lebanon since October 7, when it launched a genocidal war on the Gaza Strip.  Hezbollah has been responding with strikes aimed both at retaliating against the regime and supporting the war-hit Gazans.

The regime has repeatedly threatened to expand its attacks into another wholesale military onslaught against the country.  Hezbollah has vowed to defend the Lebanese soil with all its resources.

Two Israeli wars waged against Lebanon in 2000 and 2006 were met with strong resistance from Hezbollah, resulting in the retreat of the regime in both conflicts.

Meanwhile, retired Israeli general Itzhak Brik warned that if the regime’s campaign of genocide in the besieged Gaza Strip continues for another year and the conflict expands into a regional war, Israel will collapse.

“If this war of attrition which has recently expanded with Hezbollah, continues for another year, there is a high probability Israel may not survive,” Brik told the Hebrew-language Radio 103FM.

Itzhak Brik previously headed the educational unit of the military.  He said the explosion of wireless communication devices in Lebanon has greatly reinforced the emphasis on the continuation of this war with the real danger of expanding it into a regional war on multiple fronts.

The retired general also stated that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s motives “are not rational, but rather stem from his desire to survive at any cost,” emphasizing that he is continuing a war in which Israel cannot win.

Brik said Netanyahu must stop “the futile fighting” against Hamas and not decide to fight against the entire Arab world, warning that that Israel cannot survive for long without “the enlightened Western world, which is distancing itself” from this entity.
