Buenos Aires, November 14 (RHC)-- President Javier Milei ordered on Wednesday the withdrawal of the Argentine delegation participating in the UN World Climate Summit (COP29), taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.  The decision comes on the third day of the event, where more than 200 countries are meeting to discuss strategies against climate change.

According to media reports, some officials were instructed to return to Argentina without having participated in the main debates of the first days.  The Argentinian ambassador in Baku, Mariángeles Bellusci, was also notified to leave the event, despite having attended the opening ceremony.

The objective of the Argentinian delegation was to actively participate in the discussions, and to establish dialogues with other countries and non-governmental organizations on climate issues, but its work was frustrated by Milei's decision, which is in line with his climate change denialist stance and his questioning of climate change policies. This stance is similar to that adopted by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

According to experts, Argentina cannot withdraw from the Paris Agreement, which it joined in 2013 and was ratified in 2016, taking into account that it takes one year to complete that process.

The present issue of COP29 has been marked by calls for global cooperation in a context where climate change is already having palpable effects.

During the opening ceremony, COP29 President Mujtar Babaiev (Minister of Economy and Natural Resources of the host country) warned of the urgency of action. “We are heading for ruin. And it's not about future problems. Climate change is already here, the moment of truth has arrived,” he stressed.
