Mexico City, December 24 (RHC-teleSUR) -- The Mexican Navy has announced that it received an anonymous call alerting authorities about five bodies that were found in a mass grave located in the foothills of the Sierra de Zapaliname, in the northern state of Coahuila.

The bodies were found early Tuesday morning and the search was coordinated with a local agency, the Assistant Attorney for Search and Investigation of Missing People. The remains will be taken to the Scientific Unit of the Federal Police to obtain a genetic profile in order to identify the cause of death.

Authorities said that the bodies could belong to victims of organized crime, which has a big presence in that part of the country. No more details have been given so far.

Mexico is facing an acute crime crisis that has increased since former President Felipe Calderon launched his so-called “war on drugs.” According to official figures, over 100,000 people have been killed in Mexico in gang-related violence since 2007.

Some analysts say drug cartels pay over $100 million per month in bribes to municipal police officers, and since President Enrique Peña Nieto was elected, 30,789 people have been killed.
