Mexico City, March 4 (teleSUR-RHC)-- The head of one of Mexico’s most violent drug cartels known as the Zetas, Omar Treviño Morales, was detained in a joint army and police operation, Mexican officials reported Wednesday. Omar took over the Zetas leadership after his brother, Miguel Angel Treviño Morales, was arrested and jailed in June 2013.

Officials said the drug leader, known as Z-42, was captured early Wednesday in Monterrey, the capital of the northern state of Nuevo Leon. Treviño Morales’ detention comes days after the police arrested Servando Gomez “La Tula” in Morelia, in the central state of Michoacan. La Tuta is the leader of Los Caballeros Templarios or the Knights Templars, which is a satellite group of the internationally-powerful Sinaloa cartel, whose leader Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman was arrested last year.

The Zetas is considered to be one of the most violent organized crime groups in Mexico, known for mutilating, decapitating, incinerating or dissolving their rivals in acid in order to relay a message of fear and intimidation.

The group was initially headed by Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, who died in a shootout with the army on October 7, 2012, in Coahuila.

The Mexican government had offered a $2 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Treviño Morales, while the United States was offering a $5 million reward.
