Sao Paulo, March 6 (teleSUR-RHC)-- As farmers, neighbor associations and social movements question the idea, spread by the media, that southern Brazil’s lack of water is due to a lack of rain, one association is organizing a People’s Water Court, which will come into effect March 20th.

The institution will evaluate the role of local governments in the management of water and the influence of economic powers in the sector, as well as the neglect of measures and works that guarantee the water supply, reported the online site Adital.

Heading up the initiative is the Alliance for Water. Created in January, it is made up of 10 diverse groups, which are mobilizing to defend the poor urban population seriously affected by water rationing.

The collective highlighted the need to convey a different picture of the water crisis than the simple one portrayed by the mainstream media, as well as the need to investigate its potential causes and mechanisms in depth. They say that only then they will be able to push for measures that will guarantee a more equitable access to water.
