Mexico City, June 15 (teleSUR-RHC)-- Former Mexican First Lady Margarita Zavala announced via video her decision to run for president on Sunday, and not for the leadership of main opposition National Action Party (PAN).
“I will not contend for the leadership. The party has men and women in the height of this challenge and I trust that in PAN we can make the best decision. For these reasons, I have decided that in the times that signal the electoral law, I will seek to become the president of the republic,” she said in the video, posted to her Twitter account.
Zavala is the wife of Felipe Calderon who was president of Mexico from 2006 to 2012. A fervent enthusiast of the U.S. war on drugs, under Calderon’s watch the country was militarized and thousand of people were “disappeared.”
On her video, Zavala explained that due to current circumstances within Mexican politics, and due to the electoral losses at the recent region votes, she will rely on the support of the citizens to create a new national project.
“But also to those who have voted for other alternative policies and those who have stopped believing in the parties as an instrument of democracy. I am going to travel the country, listen to people, talk about our possibilities and about what we want for the future,” she said.
