Guatemala City, June 22 (teleSUR-RHC)-- As Guatemala's campaign for general elections gets underway under highly unusual political circumstances, 84 percent of Guatemalans agree that President Otto Perez Molina should resign from office, Guatemala's Prensa Libre reported on Friday.

The public opinion poll was conducted by the youth movement “Let's make it stop” and asked respondents four questions related to government corruption, political and electoral reform, and the potential resignation of the president. The vast majority of the 15,000 people surveyed, 84 percent, said they believe Perez Molina is maintaining a corrupt political system and should resign. Of the remaining respondents, six percent said they did not think Perez Molina should resign, and 10 percent said they didn't know.

The poll results come a day after the congressional investigation considering stripping Perez Molina of legal immunity to allow him to be tried for corruption was suspended by Guatemala's Constitutional Court.

Earlier the same day, the head of the congressional commission leading the corruption investigation against the president, Baudilio Hichos, resigned over allegations of fraud and conspiracy leveled against him.
