Washington, August 4 (RHC)-- A majority of Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives have endorsed legislation that condemns the recent nuclear accord with Iran.

U.S. Representative Peter Roskam said that 218 Republicans out of a total of 246 have signed on to a bill he sponsored, which seeks to stop the nuclear agreement with Tehran, The Hill newspaper reported on Monday.

"Congress and the American people believe a better agreement is still achievable, and we can start by walking away from this one," Roskam said in a statement. "This is why a majority of the House is prepared to vote against this deal. We will do everything in our power to stop an accord that so utterly fails to shut down Iran's nuclear program," he claimed.

Congress is reviewing the recent agreement between Tehran and the P5+1 group of countries and will vote on it in September. Most Republicans oppose the nuclear accord. However, they need a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress to override a presidential veto and to reach that threshold, Republicans need Democrats' support.

Senior officials from the Obama administration have urged Congress to support the agreement with Iran, saying rejecting it will trigger another war in the Middle East.
