Chicago, December 15 (RHC)-- A U.S. Army National Guard soldier has pleaded guilty to plotting with his cousin to attack a suburban Chicago military base with the aim of killing over 100 people as part of a plan to assist Daesh Takfiris.

Hasan Edmonds, 23, a soldier in the U.S. Army National Guard was charged along with his cousin, Jonas Edmonds, with planning to carry out an armed attack on the military base where Hasan Edmonds had been training as a soldier 55 kilometers southwest Chicago.

Prosecutors said Monday that Edmonds had been using online social networks in January to communicate with an undercover Federal Bureau of Investigation agent pretending to be a Daesh Takfiri militant in Libya. Edmonds admitted to giving the purported militant advice on "how to fight and defeat the U.S. military," adding that he and his cousin were ready to conduct an attack in the United States.

Edmonds and his cousin, both U.S. citizens, began meeting with another undercover agent in March who pretended to help Edmonds plan a trip to the Daesh-held city of Mosul in Iraq to join the terror group.

"Thanks to the efforts of many prosecutors, agents and analysts, we were able to ensure these plotters did not attain their violent endgames, and with these guilty pleas, they will be held accountable," John Carlin, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, said in a statement.

Hasan Edmonds and Jonas Edmonds face up to 30 and 23 years in prison respectively for conspiring to provide support to a foreign terrorist organization.
