Caracas, January 6 (RHC-TelesurTV)-- As Venezuela's new opposition-controlled National Assembly was sworn in Tuesday, socialist lawmakers stormed out of the parliament building, protesting against what they termed as a violation of norms over the right to speak.

“We are 54 legislators of the country who are prepared to defend the Venezuelan people,” PSUV legislator Diosdado Cabello told press outside the assembly.

He added, “We left because we made a formal complaint … that went ignored.”

Incoming legislator and former Assembly President Celia Flores stressed that while the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) now controls the legislature, Maduro’s government will continue to fight for socialism started under his predecessor, the late Hugo Chavez.

“We will continue to support our people,” Flores stressed, arguing that many Venezuelans who voted for the right wing in December are likely to regret their vote.
