Namibia's Historic Leader Sam Nujoma

Havana, September 24 (RHC/acn)--Namibia´s historic leader Sam Nujoma, the first elected president of that southern African nation, will pay a visit to Cuba September 27 to October 3.

The Cuban Foreign Ministry's website writes that during a meeting in Windhoek with Cuban ambassador Giraldo Mazola, Nujoma said he felt moved to again be visiting Cuba, which he described as a land of great friends of Namibia, high among them revolution leader Fidel Castro.

When the South West Africa People´s Organization, the SWAPO, was born, in April 1960, Sam Nujoma was elected as president of that liberation movement leading the struggle against the occupation of Namibia by the South African racist regime.

In January of 1990, Nujoma was elected the first president of a free Namibia.

During his meeting with the Cuban ambassador in Windhoek, the Namibian leader recalled that Cuba played a key role in the liberation and independence of his country, for which he said Namibia will always be thankful.

Namibia and Cuba established diplomatic relations on May 21, 1990, the day when the African nation declared its independence.
