Havana, January 16 (RHC)-- Cuba has been developing a system of special schools for the past 52 years to support families with children requiring special education programs. At present, the island has 400 special schools, with a total registration of 40.000 students.

Nearly 16,000 professionals are in charge of the education of the children, applying specialized training to meet the educational meets of the kids and help those who get necessary skills join the general education stream. Some achieve this, some do not, depending on the degree of difficulties the children have and their abilities to depend on themselves.

The schools include mentally retarded students and other children with psychological development problems, autism, language difficulties, the visually impaired, the blind, the hearing impaired, the deaf, and others with physical limitations.
