Paris, November 3 (RHC-ACN)-- Cuban Minister for Science, Technology and the Environment, Elba Rosa Perez Montoya met Wednesday in Paris with Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary of UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanography Commission.

The exchange with the UNESCO representative to the 39th General Conference underway in the French capital is part of a program of the Cuban government official, who is heading the country’s delegation to that European country.

Perez Montoya gave a detailed explanation on the State Plan to Confront Climate Change approved by the Cuban Council of Ministers, which aims to recover coastal ecosystems, particularly coral reefs.

She pointed out that cooperation with the International Oceanography Commission would be of great importance to Cuba and the Caribbean for the implementation of this and other conservation projects.

She added that there is work underway with the Caribbean Community in personnel training and research regarding climate change and studies on the danger, vulnerability and risks.

Both sides also attempted to approach the possibility of strengthening joint work in areas such as monitoring the acidification of the oceans and the early alert on tsunamis, using new technologies.

The Intergovernmental Oceanography Commission watches over the protection of the oceans and alongside other UN agencies work in the application of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.
