Havana, December 26 (RHC)-- The Latin American School of Medicine, ELAM, has trained almost 29,000 doctors from 90 countries, in its 14 graduations, said Luis Estruch, Professor Emeritus of the center founded by the leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro.

In statements to the press, Estruch said that ELAM is one of the great achievements following the 1959 revolutionary triumph and the thinking of Fidel Castro, who promoted its construction after two hurricanes passed through Central America and the Caribbean.

According to the Cuban professor, two-thirds of the graduates of the school have the title validated in their countries where they practice.  Among them are two ministers of Public Health, from Bolivia and Costa Rica, as well as deputy ministers, provincial directors of health and scientists.

Out of the total number of graduates, one-third did their speciality in the medical consulting offices of Cuba, and in other health institutions, and then upon returning to their countries they arrive with the title of doctor and specialist.

Among the graduates of ELAM are 172 young Americans, most of them validated in the United States, where they work in poor neighborhoods and promote community programs.
