New York, January 12 (RHC)--Cuba´s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Anayansi Rodriguez, has urged member states of the international organization to find solutions to address the root causes of the large irregular migration flows currently happening in the world.

In an address Thursday at a debate of the General Assembly, Rodriguez stressed that key to those solutions is the elimination of poverty and inequality that prevail in developing countries.

The Cuban diplomat commented about some of the subjects that are to be included in the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, whose final negotiation and approval are scheduled for this year.

The document will be the first UN-sponsored intergovernmental agreement to cover all dimensions of international migration.

Rodriguez spoke of the need to eliminate barriers being built today that obstruct migration and that do not address the causes that lead to the phenomenon and she stressed the state’s share responsibility in the attention of this issue.

The Cuban ambassador to the UN noted that future actions leading to the implementation of the Global Compact will have to be guided by the principles of respect to the sovereignty, equality and sovereignty of all states, as well as the dignity and well-being of migrants and their relatives.

Anayansi Rodriguez reiterated Cuba´s commitment to participate actively and constructively in the negotiations that will lead to the adoption of the Global Compact.
