Wildfire at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantánamo has been put out with help from Cuba's Revolutionary Armed Forces

Havana, Feb. 28 (RHC)-- A wildfire at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantánamo has been put out with help from Cuba's Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR).

Granma newspaper reported Wednesday that Cuba sent crews in several trucks and a helicopter to help extinguish the fire in a remote section of the base.

Granma explained that the joint action took place amidst logistics  complications derived from the fact that the U.S. naval base is located in a portion of Cuban territory illegally occupied by the U.S. against the will of the Cuban people.

The wildfire prompted the U.S. military to evacuate about 300 of the 5,500 people stationed at the base.

Guantánamo is the oldest U.S. overseas military installation and covers about 45 square miles. Cuba has long demanded the withdrawal of all U.S. troops from the enclave and its return to its legitimate owners –the Cuban people.
