Medical and scientific cooperation brings Cuba and the United States together

United States, June 27 (RHC)-- Health and scientific cooperation between Cuba and the United States was the main subject of a special issue of the MEDICC Review journal, presented on June 25 at the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)-- a prestigious scientific institution headquartered in the U.S. capital.

The event featured remarks by Rush Holt, Chief Executive Officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Gail Reed, Executive of MEDICC Review and José Ramón Cabañas, Cuban Ambassador to the United States. 

A panel of experts with working experience with Cuba elaborated on the content of some of the articles in this special issue of MEDICC Review about concrete achievements in bilateral health cooperation.

The historic relationship of cooperation that has existed between the Academy of Science of Cuba and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the cooperation between Cuban and American scientists in arbovirus research, the elimination of tuberculosis, fishing sustainability and the case study on international cooperation between the Center for Molecular Immunology of Cuba and the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Institute, were some of the topics addressed during the event.

Panelists included F. Gray Handley, Associate Director for International Research Affairs at the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID); Helena J. Chapman, AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow, University of Florida; Rachel Evans, a researcher in Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Institute; Valerie Miller, an expert with the Environmental Defense Fund and Marga Gual Soler, Senior Project Director at the AAAS Center for Science Diplomacy.
