Havana, July 28 (RHC)-- Over the past 6 years, traffic accidents have killed 4,446 people and injured some 50,000 others in Cuba, and they have become the leading cause of death among young people between the ages of 15 and 29 years old.

The figures were disclosed at a recent meeting of the Council of Ministers, in a report on the need to strengthen road safety on the island presented by Transportation Minister Adel Yzquierdo Rodríguez.

According to the text, the main causes of these accidents include social indiscipline, the absence of signals and road signs, the deterioration of roads, and vehicles technically unfit to circulate.

During the meeting that was presided over by President Miguel Diaz-Canel, a set of actions designed to reinforce road safety in the short, medium and long terms was announced, emphasizing the importance of increasing education on this subject.

Diaz-Canel stressed that this situation was of utmost concern, not only for the amount of deaths and injuries it provokes, but also for the impact it has on the island’s economy.
