Havana, January 24 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel has vehemently condemned the attempt to install a U.S.-backed parallel government in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

"We categorically condemn and reject the attempt to impose, through a coup, a government serving U.S. interests in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.  We reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the government of constitutional president Nicolás Maduro," Diaz-Canel tweeted.

In a statement issued January 23rd, the Cuban Foreign Ministry noted that the recent actions against Venezuela are aimed at controlling the nation’s vast resources and destroying its valuable example in defense of the sovereignty, dignity and independence of Our America.

The text also recalled past acts of aggression against the sister nation, including a military coup in 2002, the oil strike of 2003, and assassination attempt against democratically elected president Nicolas Maduro last August.

This Wednesday, the Venezuelan head of state severed diplomatic ties with the United States after Washington recognized self-proclaimed interim president and head of the Venezuelan Parliament, Juan Guaidó.

Venezuela has the right to free self-determination and independence, stated Maduro, who warned that the irresponsible behavior of opposition sectors and the U.S. government could lead to an internal conflict.
