Santiago de Cuba, May 29 (RHC)-- Russia is currently sponsoring a 1-million-dollar cooperation project, promoted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), to mitigate the effects of drought and climate change in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba.

Russian Ambassador to Cuba Andrei Guskov and the UNDP representative on the island, Maribel Gutierrez traveled to the province on a work visit.

Speaking to local press, the Russian diplomat said his country has always supported the Cuban people, and that Russia is engaged in projects underway on the island to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

“The project is about strengthening the resilience.  We are sure that with the use of the works that will be made thanks to this project, mechanisms will be established to overcome the consequences of these type of natural disasters”, the Russian ambassador said.

The Ambassador and the UNDP delegation were received by the head of the government of Santiago de Cuba, Beatriz Johnson.
