UN mechanism on corruption visits Cuba

Encounter of the mechanism delegation with the General Comptroller of Cuba.

Havana, June 28 (RHC)-- The mechanism to review the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Corruption is concluding a visit to Cuba Friday after three days of exchanges with government institutions.

The exercise offers opportunities to talk about good practices in prevention and fight against this scourge in countries around the world, and promoting and strengthening of cooperation among the States parties to the UN pact.

According to Granma newspaper, examiners from Uruguay, Mozambique and Officials of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) came as part of the mechanism delegation.

They held meetings with officials from the General Comptroller of the Republic, the Attorney General of the Republic, the Supreme People's Court, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Central Bank of Cuba, the Ministry of Finance and Prices, among other institutions.

According to a note from the Comptroller General Officer cited by Granma, the visit was preceded by a self-assessment exercise, which established the bases on which, together with the study of current legislation, the examiners raise their observations and questions.

Measures for the direct recovery of assets, international cooperation for the purpose of confiscation, and the restitution and disposition of assets are some of the topics that were discussed, as well as measures to prevent money laundering, policies and practices to prevent corruption, and codes of conduct for public officials.

The note said that the exchanges with the visiting mechanism were held guided by the principles of sovereign equality, territorial integrity and respect for the island´s internal legal system.
