Havana, December 8 (RHC)-- Army General Raúl Castro Ruz paid tribute Sunday to outstanding revolutionary Faure Chomón Mediavilla, with an Honor Guard held at the Christopher Columbus Cemetery in Havana.

Chomon passed away on December 5th at the age of 90 due to multiorgan dysfunction syndrome.

A member of the University Students Directorate during the struggle against the Batista dictatorship in the 1950s, Faure Chomón was one of the participants in the attack on the Presidential Palace in March 1957.  He fought in the Sierra Maestra mountains under the command of Ernesto Che Guevara and was promoted to the rank of Comandante of the Rebel Army.

After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, Faure Chomón carried out important political responsibilities.  He served as Cuba's ambassador to the Soviet Union, as well as ambassador to Ecuador and Vietnam.  He was a founding member of the Cuban Communist Party and also served as First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party in Las Tunas province.

Floral offerings by Raúl, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Central Committee of the PCC, the National Assembly of People's Power (parliament), the Ministry of the Armed Forces, and the Association of Combatants were placed next to the ashes of the revolutionary.

Accompanying Raúl Castro in the honor guard were José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Party, Army Corps General Ramón Espinosa, vice-minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, and Esteban Lazo, president of the National Assembly of People's Power and the State Council.
