Havana, April 25 (RHC) -- Cuban and foreign experts addressed the challenges and prospects of current relations between the European Union and Latin America during a forum held on Thursday in Havana.

Along with regional relations, the experts also focused on links between Cuba and the European bloc, and the prospects of future negotiations.

During the forum held at Havana’s International Relations Institute, Havana University professor and researcher, Eduardo Perera, stressed plans towards an accord for bilateral dialog and cooperation between Cuba and the European Union for the first time in 25 years.

The expert highlighted the importance of attempts to normalize bilateral relations between the 28 European countries and the Caribbean island, which were limited due to the so-called Common Position against Cuba, adopted by that bloc in 1996.

However, Perera said that there are challenges on the road, such as the search for solutions in tune with the ideological grounds of both parties and the setting up of real bilateral exchange.

For the Cuban expert, another major challenge is overcoming possible actions by some who oppose the bilateral dialog, including adversaries inside the European Union and the United States.

The signing of an accord between the European Union and Cuba would enable important advancements of international relations.
