Havana, April 30 (RHC) -- On Tuesday, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) adopted a resolution expressing its strong opposition to the unlawful use of the Zunzuneo social network, developed by the U.S. government to promote political unrest in Cuba.

In a statement, the regional bloc criticized the illegal use of new information and communication technologies to pursue political and economic interests, instead promoting international cooperation.

CELAC highlights the need to ensure that the use of these technologies is fully compatible with the principles of the UN Charter, international law, and the respect for sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of the states.

Operating for more than two years and boasting tens of thousands of subscribers, ZunZuneo was a mobile phone-based social network developed under the Obama administration to promote anti-government protests in Cuba.

The programme was secretly backed by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) through a myriad of shell companies and offshore bank accounts.

In this regard, CELAC reiterated its commitment to intensify international efforts to "safeguard cyberspace and promote its exclusive use for peaceful purposes and as a mean to contribute to the economic and social development of the peoples."
