Havana, April 28 (RHC)-- According to the dean of the Mathematics Faculty of the University of Havana, Raúl Guinovart Díaz, COVID-19's peak is expected to take place next week in Cuba.  The expert said: "The forecast now indicates that next week, approximately, we would be at the peak, ahead of the international average.  It is a reserved prognosis that will depend on the evolution of the disease in the next few days."

But, he noted, without the measures of social isolation, the model may grow again and go to a critical scenario.  "The epidemic is vulnerable to the actions taken, but it depends on social behavior and governmental measures.  It has been proven that we can change the course of the epidemic."

In this scenario, a vaccine is seen as the only solution to the pandemic caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus, a highly transmissible pathogen.  The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that there are 70 of them in development around the world; Cuban health authorities, through their public media system, have said that they are working on four vaccine candidates, while they have incorporated a wide range of medicines, led by recombinant Interferon Alpha 2b, in the therapy of patients, both positive and suspicious.
