Georgetown, May 12 (RHC)-- The foreign affairs ministers of the countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) reiterated their rejection to the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba and called for its lifting.

The demand against the unilateral measure with which for almost 60 years the northern government has been pressuring the Greater Antilles to abdicate its revolutionary process and its system of socialist development, took place in the context of the Twenty-third Meeting of the Council of Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) of CARICOM.

COFCOR, during the virual on-line meeting held last week, paid tribute to the Cuban government and people for providing public health personnel to increase the limited capacity of the region in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the country's own challenges aggravated by the U.S. measures.

The foreign affairs ministers called for an immediate and unconditional lifting of the blockade, reports CARICOM Today, and highlights the agenda discussed by the foreign affairs ministers at the meeting, which was chaired by Claude Joseph, Haiti's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Worship.

Among other issues, they discussed several challenges facing the Caribbean region, aggravated by the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All spoke of the need to unify as a region on matters of critical importance, particularly in response to the pandemic and the subsequent economic devastation.  In this regard, they paid tribute to the regional institutions, the Caribbean Public Health Agency, the Pan American Health Organization, and the frontline health workers fighting the pandemic.
