Paris, 26 May (RHC)-- The Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for the African Department, Firmin Edouard Matoko, acknowledged Cuba's solidarity with Africa, which forms part of the deep bonds of friendship that unite them.

"We know Cuba's total commitment, expressed in actions of collaboration and brotherhood with the peoples of the continent for more than five decades," he expressed in a message in the context of UNESCO's African Week and the celebration, the day before, of Africa Day -- affected this year by COVID-19.

According to the UN official, the pandemic demands greater international cooperation and the contribution of multilateralism.  "That is why we want to offer praise to the Cuban medical brigades, which plays a decisive role in the health of the African continent," he said.

Matoko pointed out that in the times of COVID-19, the island "once again accepted the challenge and made itself present in this world crisis,  once again extending their hands to assist the African continent."

The assistant director general pointed out that Africa is a priority for UNESCO, an organization that works to accompany it in areas such as peace and sustainable development.

For Matoko, although the terrible health crisis that is hitting the planet is affecting this year's celebrations, it does not prevent the opportunity to recognize African culture and development.
