Havana, July 15 (RHC)-- As an expression of the historic solidarity between Cuba and Africa, medicines, protective equipment and other medical supplies arrived in Havana as part of the second donation from various institutions and the government of South Africa to contribute to the battle against COVID-19.

In the simple act of gratitude, held this Wednesday at the Ministry of Foreign Trade -- MINCEX -- the South African ambassador to Cuba, Thaninga Pandit Shope, said that her government takes great pleasure in helping the Caribbean island "with the little they have."

"We know what Cuba has done in the world helping in the fight against COVID-19.  This has always been a country that shares what little it has.  Cuba never gives what it has too much of, because it has not been allowed to have too much."

The diplomat thanked the Cuban government for its help to her nation by sending 217 doctors from the Henry Reeve Brigade on April 27.  "The problem over there is very serious and the Cuban assistance is very helpful.  The solidarity that exists between Cuba and Africa is unbreakable."

On behalf of the Government, the Party and the Cuban people, the First Vice-Minister of MINCEX, Ana Teresita González Fraga, thanked the donation received, as well as other contributions made by African states.

"We have received means of protection, materials and supplies for Cuban health facilities, such as masks, gloves, infrared thermometers, surgical means and supplies, covers for hospital beds and food; all of significant importance to be able to face this pandemic," said the vice president.

She also reiterated that the cooperation of the African peoples once again demonstrates the close relations between that continent and Cuba, and its historic leaders.

"In this difficult situation we are facing, it is essential to continue developing cooperation in other priority areas such as economic assistance, education, agriculture, construction, human settlements, public and infrastructure works, water resources, transportation, and mining, among other sectors.
