Havana, May 14 (RHC) -- Specialists of the National Center for Sex Education (CENESEX) recognized on Friday that the approval of a new Family Code in Cuba is imminent.
Speaking on the occasion of the 14th edition of the Cuban Days against Homophobia and Transphobia, the deputy director of CENESEX, Manuel Vázquez, pointed out among the main demands of the LGBTIQ+ community the possibility of marriage for all people without distinction.
These aspects make progress along with the necessary education for the social, political, and even parliamentary debate in the nation, said the director of the institution, Mariela Castro.
After 14 years since the first celebration of the Cuban Days against Homophobia and Transphobia, we have observed a remarkable cultural change since the first time we began to deal with them publicly', said the Cuban congresswoman in the television program Mesa Redonda (Round Table).
In that sense, she stressed the importance of dialogue with the population to know the impact on families, teachers, legal and other social actors in understanding the different gender identities.
In recent years, she added, the link between this activism and the political and legislative life of the country has become evident.
Based on what was previously done, a social debate is achieved, with contributions from academia, Parliament, activists, and others.
In this regard, Vázquez recognized as other demands of these communities the strengthening of the specific protection of LGBTIQ+ people in the criminal field against acts of violence based on sexual orientation, identity, or gender expression.
Likewise, he mentioned access to assisted reproduction and better health services for the comprehensive care of transgender people.
The Constitution approved in 2019 set the legal and juridical framework to work in that sense, she added.
The XIV edition of the Cuban Days against Homophobia and Transphobia, to be held between May 4 and 30, focuses on the process of modifying the Family Code.
The event has been organized in Cuba since 2008 by CENESEX to contribute to the comprehensive education on sexuality and the recognition of the rights of all people without distinction as an exercise of equity and social justice.
