Havana, July 2 (RHC)-- Cuba is taking measures to minimize possible damages that could be caused by tropical storm Elsa amid a complex situation due to Covid-19.

On Thursday, the Caribbean nation's top authorities indicated the updating and implementing all disaster risk reduction plans, with particular emphasis on the evacuation of people, to avoid large concentrations and overcrowding amid the pandemic.

According to the island's Institute of Meteorology forecasts, the event could begin to be felt in the eastern part of the country from Saturday night and early Sunday morning. Heavy rains are expected as part of its advance through the national territory.

All this happens when the incidence rates of Covid-19 have increased in all provinces in the last 15 days, and the implementation of the community transmission phase forces to apply more rigorous provisions to stop contagions.

Prime Minister Manuel Marrero instructed the preparation of the National Electric Power Grid to provide the most significant possible vitality to the fundamental centers of the economy and services, and especially to the health facilities linked to the fight against the pandemic.

He also insisted on having the brigades ready to solve the electrical and water pipeline failures and foresee the fuel reserves.

Given the possible impact of the tropical storm, the institutions began to protect material resources, clean drains and sewers, and adopt other general measures foreseen in these cases.
