Washington, July 13 (RHC)--The chairman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, Democrat Gregory Meeks, called on U.S. President Joe Biden to lift the economic sanctions against Cuba imposed by his predecessor, Donald Trump.
"Cubans face great hardship due to the economic and health impacts of COVID-19 and the strict sanctions cruelly imposed by the Trump Administration," Meeks said in a statement.
"I call on President Biden to help alleviate the suffering in Cuba by rescinding the Trump era sanctions and offering additional humanitarian and vaccine assistance to the Cuban people", Congressman Meeks also tweeted.
For his part, Congressman Jim McGovern, Chairman of the House Rules Committee said It's deeply disappointing that President Biden has failed to reverse Donald Trump's executive orders, which support an outdated Cold War strategy and an embargo that only adds to the suffering of ordinary Cubans.
McGovern added that by perpetuating Trump's policies, the Biden Administration fails to offer the Cuban people the type of hope that President Obama spoke about when he traveled to Havana. A hope that is rooted in a future that Cubans can choose for themselves as they build their own country.
