Havana, August 19 (RHC) -- Dr. Sara Urgellés Carreras, a second-degree specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology and full professor at the Doctor Luis Díaz Soto Military Hospital, called for greater care of pregnant women, given the notable increase in the transmission and severity of COVID-19 in this population group.

In a televised appearance, the specialist alluded to the increase in the number of infected pregnant women in all the provinces of the country and, above all, to the stay of several of them in intensive care units, where a significant number of them are in critical condition, with clinical evolutions "that today we cannot guarantee that they will survive, despite all the human and material resources that are used," the doctor regretted.

For this reason, she warned, it is crucial for the population and the family to interiorize the complexity of the evolution of a pregnant woman when she is infected with the disease.

"The evolution is very unfavorable, especially in the gestational age of 26 to 32 weeks, and in patients who are overweight, obese, and have decompensated diabetes," she stressed.

In more than a few cases, these situations have forced the medical team to decide to terminate the pregnancy in those between 26 and 30 weeks of gestation, with the negative consequences that this can have on fertility, Dr. Urgellés Carreras pointed out.

Concerning the comorbidities that aggravate the state of health of pregnant women, the specialist emphasized the need for both the family and the health care physician to get involved in keeping diseases such as diabetes and hypertension compensated, as these are the most frequent causes of complications in pregnancies and lead to more unfavorable progress in the face of SARS-COV-2 infection.
